The importance of understanding your finish

We offer over 25 luxury finishes & patinas ranging from warm to cool tones, living to plated, brushed to distressed and so much more. All our finishes have been developed in-house, with many still hand-applied by our skilled team of artisans.

We understand that choosing the finish for your hardware is as important as choosing the style.

Your chosen finish can impact the look, feel and durability of your hardware, and there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration before you make your all-important decision.

We’ve put together a short overview of what to look out for when selecting your finish.

Types of finishes

Living Finishes

Living finishes such as Aged Brass, Smoked Brass and Antique Brass will alter over time. Before they leave our factory, living finishes are coated with a protective wax coating which will naturally wear, allowing the finish beneath to change. With continued use, the touch points on the hardware reveal the brass underneath, telling the story of how the hardware is used through these unique variations. Applying a good quality beeswax polish can slow the ageing process, however, for many people the appeal of a living finish is how it evolves over time.

Lacquered Finishes

Lacquered finishes such as Dark Bronze and Antique Nickel are covered in a protective coating which enhances their longevity and durability. With correct care, lacquered finishes can maintain the original appearance of the finish for a long time after installation, but heavy usage and atmospheric conditions can quicken the ageing process. For this reason, these types of finishes are often used indoors and not in high-usage locations to keep the finish looking its best.

Plated finishes

Finishes such as Polished Chrome, Pearl Nickel, and Polished Nickel are plated. This means that with proper care they will not significantly change with time and usage. Polished plated finishes, such as Polished Chrome and Polished Nickel, are particularly durable and tend to perform well in coastal areas and other areas affected by atmospheric conditions, as long as they are cleaned regularly and correctly.

Zero Black

Zero Black is one of our newest finishes, born out of the desire to create the darkest, and most matte black finish possible. This finish is a coating, and in order to retain the striking appearance it should only be cleaned with a soft cloth, avoiding chemicals which can lead to deterioration of the finish.

Bronze

We offer a number of brass finishes in bronze tones such as Autumn Bronze, IBUL and Oil Rubbed Bronze. In addition to these, we do also offer two finishes in real bronze finishes, Tudor Bronze and RBMA, that are available on select products. You can view our Cast Bronze collection here.
