The Evolution of English Architectural Details: Charles Brooking

From period homes to historic buildings, our hardware has long played a role in the fabric of British architecture.

Whether it’s a statement door lever or an elegant cabinetry fixture, every piece of hardware, even the most unassuming window fitting, bears the imprint of generations of design and craftsmanship, a tradition we’ve upheld since our founding in 1868.

Charles Brooking, the Founding Collector of The Brooking Museum, and Architectural Historian and Historic Buildings Consultant at the Charles Brooking Teaching Gallery,  has devoted his life to studying and preserving the evolution of English architectural details, recognising that sash pulleys can be a useful dating guide when identifying later windows in a building. His extensive collection and expert research provide invaluable insights for architects, conservationists, and heritage professionals.

At Croft, our passion for craftsmanship and heritage lives through our period-accurate portfolio.

Our window hardware is thoughtfully designed to blend authentic style with enduring quality. A prime example is our 6399 Square Edge and 6399R Radius Edge Sash Pulleys, which for this project were supplied in our Polished Nickel finish.

Each pulley is precision engineered and finished by hand in our factory in the heart of England. The two edge profiles, square and radius, make them a versatile choice, suitable for both traditional restorations and more contemporary settings.

Our Polished Nickel finish is a plated finish with a crisp, reflective surface and a subtle warmth. It offers timeless elegance along with lasting durability, making it ideal for restoration projects where authenticity and performance go hand in hand.

We were pleased to have donated these sash pulleys to the Charles Brooking Teaching Gallery, where they now form part of a growing collection used to educate and inspire those involved in the care and conservation of historic buildings.

Supporting the Teaching Gallery allows us to showcase how these seemingly small details play a vital role in the character and function of period windows. It’s a privilege to see our products used as educational tools to inspire future generations in the art of architectural conservation.
