The Harmony Lever, Inspired by Parametric Design

What is parametric design?

Parametric design is a contemporary approach to architecture and design that uses advanced digital tools to generate parametric algorithms for complex, adaptive forms. This method enables thoughtful adaptations while maintaining curvature continuity throughout the creative process.

“Architectural, parametric principles translated for hardware that creates an harmonious gesture.”  – Croft Product Designer

Pioneered and most notably recognised through the work of Zaha Hadid, parametric design represents a manifesto of mathematically driven form. Creating seamless, fluid spaces that balance innovation with beauty.

Why Croft utilises parametric design?

Hardware is, in essence, the first point of connection to a home, and our mission is to make that connection feel as inviting as possible. This is where parametric design becomes an essential tool, allowing us to explore and liberate form in a controlled and considered way, while ensuring every detail remains seamless in production. This level of precision is especially important when working with polished finishes, where continuity and consistency are critical to the final result.

Parametric design in practice

Our in-house design team used these parametric design principles when creating the Harmony Lever.

The form began as a defined three-dimensional curve, carefully modelled to mirror the natural arch of the hand. From this foundation, skeletal curves sculpted the gesture of the piece, creating soft creases that guide and caress the thumb, before flowing seamlessly into the palm and gradually dissipating along the handle.

The use of parametric tools allowed the designer to refine the model repeatedly though 16 iterations until the final form was deemed acceptable to our exacting standards. The result is a lever that offers a modern interpretation of form following function.

The handle also carefully considers the amount of brass used its creation. Through this process of refinement, the most efficient form was revealed, elevating the handle’s elegance and presence on the door. While demonstrating how sustainability can be thoughtfully embedded within the design process.

Ultimately, parametric design allowed us to approach the handle as both a sculptural object and a functional touchpoint. Shaped with intent, the Harmony Lever balances ergonomic comfort, material efficiency and visual continuity, reflecting Croft’s commitment to craftsmanship, innovation and thoughtful design at every scale.
